When I was young I ran away from home and ended up in a shelter. I was fleeing an abusive home life and sought safer housing. I couldn’t really live or start to enjoy life until I found a place called George Herman House which is supportive housing for women with mental health issues that houses 10 people at a time. I felt really fortunate to have a spot there because they gave me lots of help and support. We had social workers on site, access to organic food, alternative health care methods like yoga and massages and we went on several group outings. The staff were strong female role models and my best friends are women that I met while living there. I currently live at St. Jude’s where I have regained independence because it offers low supports. I’m happy to be living with my cat again. I work part time with the Dream Team and also at a pharmacy which contributes to my stability and freedom. Supportive housing has definitely changed my life for the better.
